Does Dentin Heal if You Have a Cavity?

Posted on 9/1/2025 by Singing River Dentistry Madison
Woman with pain sitting in dental chairMost of us have experienced the unpleasantness of a cavity. This common dental problem occurs when bacteria in the mouth form plaque and begin to eat away at the tooth's enamel, creating a hole or "cavity."

You might wonder if the dentin, the layer of the tooth beneath the enamel, can heal itself once a cavity forms. The answer is unfortunately no. Dentin, unlike some other tissues in the body, lacks the ability to regenerate itself. Once a cavity penetrates the dentin, only professional dental intervention can restore the tooth's health and function.

However, this doesn't mean that all hope is lost. While the dentin itself can't heal the cavity, early intervention can prevent further damage and even reverse some of the existing damage. This highlights the importance of regular dental checkups and good oral hygiene habits.

What Happens When Dentin is Affected by a Cavity?

When a cavity reaches the dentin, several things can happen:

•  Sensitivity: Dentin contains tiny tubules that lead directly to the pulp, the inner chamber of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. When a cavity exposes these tubules, it can cause sensitivity to cold, hot, and sweet foods and drinks.
•  Pain: As the cavity grows and reaches the pulp, it can irritate the nerves, leading to pain. This pain can be constant or occur only when biting or chewing.
•  Infection: If the pulp becomes infected, it can cause an abscess, which is a pus-filled pocket that can damage the surrounding bone.

How Can I Prevent Cavities from Reaching the Dentin?

The good news is that cavities are largely preventable. By following these tips, you can keep your teeth healthy and strong:

•  Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to decay.
•  Floss daily. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach.
•  Eat a healthy diet. Limit sugary foods and drinks, which can contribute to tooth decay.
•  Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can detect cavities early on and treat them before they reach the dentin.

What Happens if a Cavity Reaches the Dentin?

If you already have a cavity that has reached the dentin, don't panic. Your dentist can still treat it and restore your tooth's health. The type of treatment will depend on the severity of the cavity. In some cases, a simple filling may be all that's needed. However, if the cavity is larger or has reached the pulp, you may need a crown, root canal, or even extraction.

Conclusion

While dentin can't heal itself, early intervention can prevent further damage and even reverse some of the existing damage. By practicing good oral hygiene and visiting your dentist regularly, you can keep your teeth healthy and avoid the need for extensive treatment. If you suspect you may have a cavity, schedule an appointment with your dentist right away.
