I Have Severely Crowded Teeth. What Should I Do?

People with overcrowded teeth can have difficulty keeping their teeth clean, which leaves them vulnerable to tooth decay as well as periodontal disease. If you have severely crowded teeth, you have options to respace your teeth.

Why Are My Teeth Overcrowded?

There can be many reasons your teeth are overcrowded. Some adults suffer from overcrowded teeth because they have large teeth inside a small mouth. Also, there is a chance that you have overcrowded teeth because of heredity. If you sucked your thumb or a pacifier when you were young, you may also have overcrowded teeth. If your teeth are overcrowded, here are some treatments you can consider.

Braces or Aligners

Depending on how overcrowded your teeth are, you may be able to wear braces or clear aligners to respace them. Usually, severely overcrowded teeth require braces, which move all of your teeth at once to straighten and space them. However, if you have mild or moderate crowding, you may be able to opt for clear aligners. Many adults would prefer clear aligners because they are more difficult to notice, you can remove them to eat as well as clean your teeth, they are less expensive than braces, and the treatment time is shorter.

Veneers

Another method dentists can use to fix overcrowded teeth is veneers. Veneers are thin coatings for your teeth that are usually made of composite resin or porcelain. They can cover your overcrowded teeth and hide them from view. However, depending on how severe your overcrowding is or how far out your teeth are protruding, veneers may not work on your teeth. If you do not want to endure braces or aligners, veneers may be the perfect way to cover all of your overcrowding issues with one application.
