You may not have given much thought to the tools that dentists use on your teeth and gums. Since they play such a large role in your dental health, it may be a good idea to become familiar with dental tools so you will know how they help us maintain your oral health.
What Kinds of Tools Do Dentists Use?
Dentists use a handful of tools each day to check your teeth and gums. Of course, during your biannual exam, our dental hygienist will conduct a preliminary check, clean your teeth and gums, and take X-rays.
Mirror
Dentists use a small dental mirror that has an angled head and a long handle. Sometimes, it can be difficult to see the back of your teeth, especially your molars. Our dentist needs to be able to examine all of the areas of your teeth, so a mirror is helpful.
Suction Device
Nearly all dental procedures require our dentist to use a tiny vacuum to suck up excess saliva during a dental cleaning or other procedures, such as filling a cavity. The suction device can get rid of excess water during rinsing or your saliva to make dental cleanings and procedures more comfortable.
Sickle Probe
When it comes to checking your teeth and gums for issues, dentists rely on a sickle probe, which is also called a dental explorer. This tool has a thin, curved blade on a long handle to scrape plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums and check them for problems.
Drill
If you have a cavity, a drill is vital for getting your cavity removed. Our dentist will drill the cavity, which is a type of infection, from your tooth. Then, you will get a dental filling to protect your tooth from further damage.
What Should I Do?
If you have questions about the tools you see in our dental office, do not hesitate to ask questions. We love talking about how all of our dental tools help you to keep your teeth and gums healthy for life. Why not give us a call today to make an appointment?
