What Can Your Mouth Do to Neutralize Acid?

Posted on 6/16/2025 by Singing River Dentistry - Athens
A woman smiling brightly in the dentist chair with a bib on, waiting for her first dental appointment.Have you ever noticed that your teeth feel a bit rough after you eat certain foods, like citrus fruits or candy? That's because the acid in these foods can temporarily soften the enamel, the hard outer layer of your teeth.

The good news is, your mouth has some pretty amazing defenses against acid! Here are three ways your mouth works to neutralize acid and help protect your teeth:

1. Saliva: Your Body's Natural Defense

Saliva is your mouth's first line of defense against acid. It's like a magic mouthwash that washes away food particles and neutralizes acid with its slightly alkaline (or base) properties. Saliva also contains minerals like calcium and phosphate, which are important for rebuilding and strengthening tooth enamel.

When your mouth is dry, whether due to medication, dehydration, or even just breathing through your mouth at night, it produces less saliva. This means less protection against acid, which is why it's crucial to stay hydrated and breathe through your nose whenever possible.

2. Chewing Stimulates Saliva Production

Chewing sugar-free gum or even crunchy fruits and vegetables after meals is a great way to stimulate saliva production and help neutralize acid. The more you chew, the more saliva your mouth generates, washing away food debris and buffering the acid.

3. Time is on Your Side: Give Your Mouth a Chance

Enamel can naturally remineralize over time with the help of saliva and fluoride. So, after eating or drinking something acidic, give your mouth about 30-60 minutes before brushing your teeth. This allows the enamel time to recover from any temporary softening caused by the acid.

Here are some additional Prevention Dentistry tips for keeping acid at bay and maintaining a healthy smile:

•  Limit acidic foods and drinks: Try to eat and drink acidic foods less frequently and in moderation.
•  Don't brush too soon: Wait for 30-60 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth to avoid brushing away softened enamel.
•  Choose the right toothbrush: Opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush to protect your enamel from abrasive cleaning.
•  Rinse with water or baking soda solution: Rinse your mouth with water or a baking soda solution (half teaspoon baking soda to one cup water) to neutralize acid after consuming acidic foods or drinks.
•  Regular dental checkups and cleanings: See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. They can monitor your oral health, remove plaque and tartar buildup, and apply fluoride treatments to strengthen your teeth.

Remember, your mouth has powerful tools for neutralizing acid and protecting your teeth! By understanding how it works and following some preventive measures, you can keep your smile healthy and strong for years to come.
